At Christmastime, our condo put up a few haphazard decorations: a Christmas tree in the lobby, purple wrapping paper around some pillars, and seizure-inducing blinkie lights along the front fence. (You thought Christmas lights were supposed to twinkle? Perhaps glimmer or sparkle? Here in Singapore, they blink. Blinkie blinkie blinkie blinkie. I feel like I'm on the Southwest Freeway looking at the sign for The Colorado.) Well, shortly after New Year's Day, they took down all of the decorations. Well, almost all of them.
Now that the Christmas season is over, Chinese New Year is fast approaching, and the whole city is getting decked out. Gorgeous red lanterns everywhere. And lucky for me, our condo has decided to just carry over from Christmas and use the blinkie lights for CNY too. Yay! Another month of seeing blinking lights behind my closed eyelids, burned into my retinas!
CNY 2010 is on the 14th of February, and we are so happy to be getting our first visitor! Scott's sister Marisa will be flying in on the 11th and staying for a week. I just hope we can show her a good time in our adopted home. This being our first Lunar New Year, we're not very savvy on the haps around town, and we don't know much about how to celebrate. I do know there are red packets of money involved. And oranges maybe? And tossing raw fish salad in the air. It's all in the name of prosperity and good luck. I think I need to study up a little more.
All I know so far is that I'm loving the pretty pretty decorations!

Sounds like you'll need a good, sturdy, and very large umbrella for the celebration. Otherwise you may be spending an awful lot of time trying to wash the stench of fish out of your hair!
